Breaking Bad Recap (Season 4, Episode 11): “Crawl Space”

Walt begins an endgame he can’t finish in AMC’s Breaking Bad

Jesus Christ. With this episode, I have officially run out of positive things to say about Breaking Bad. This show… completes me. I’m pretty sure it is my soul mate. It is the reason why I watch TV. It is the reason why I want to be a writer. It is the reason why I keep on living (well, not the one reason, but it’s up there!).

“Crawl Space” begins with Jesse racing Gus and Mike to a small medical facility set up in the middle of nowhere. The staff pulls Gus out of the car and put him on a stretcher and rushes him back into the facility. While they quickly try to revive him, Jesse is left to bring Mike into the facility on his own. After telling them to help Mike too, the lead doctor tells him that Gus pays his salary and therefore he is the priority.

Back in Albuquerque, Walt has finished cooking a batch of meth. He tells Tyrus that Hank still wants to check out the chicken farm and he can’t put it off for much longer. Tyrus doesn’t respond, which results in Walt driving Hank out to the farm later that day. Walt takes the opportunity to ask Hank what has been happening with the cartel and Hank tells him someone tried to make a power play down there. Hank then asks Walt about his face: if there’s anyone that can help Walt out in this situation, it’s Hank. If only he knew how close he was.

While waiting for Gus and Mike to be revived, Jesse checks out the facility and notices that there is blood ready for him just in case he needed it. Gus knew everything about him and was prepared to save him if things didn’t go the way they did. Gus is revived and tells Jesse it is time to go: Mike won’t be able to be moved for about a week and Gus will send for him later. On the long walk to the border, Jesse once again tells Gus he can’t kill Walt.

Skyler arrives home and discovers a message from Ted, who tells her he can’t use her money to pay the IRS. She goes to his house and he tells her the money isn’t enough to truly save him. She thinks he is trying to blackmail her and wants to know if he wants more money. He denies this claim and refuses to write a check to the IRS. Skyler, frustrated, calls Saul to discuss a new plan.

Back in Albuquerque, Gus visits Hector (Tio) once again. He reveals the necklace he took off Don Eladio’s body last episode and lists all of the men who died. Hector still refuses to look at Gus, even when Gus points out that Jesse, someone Hector is familiar with, is the one responsible for killing Hector’s last family member. Gus leaves, his vengeance now satisfied.

Walt and Hank (followed by Tyrus) go for another drive to the farm… until Hank tells him this time he wants to go to an industrial laundry owned by the same company. Walt drives past the laundry much to Hank’s dismay, and then does a u-turn and is hit by an oncoming car. I guess that’s one way to get out of it.

We then cut to Hank back in bed with a neckbrace, eating frozen yoghurt with Skyler and Walt Jr. Marie brings Walt into the room, who is even more banged up than usual. Walt tries to apologize but Hank tells him it’s okay: they don’t have to bother driving him around anymore because he’s buying a “gimp mobile.” In about a week’s time, Hank will be investigating Gus on his own.

Saul informs Skyler he’s sending his A-Team to deal with Ted. This A-Team consists of Hyule, Saul’s bodyguard, and the guy Skyler used to trick Eyebrows into selling the carwash. Worst A-Team ever. Anyway, they somehow manage to threaten Ted into writing a check to the IRS. Ted then decides to escape, slips on a rug and crashes into a table. His fingers twitch but it appears Ted is no longer with the living. At least the IRS have been paid, right?

Walt sneaks into the laundry disguised as laundry. He is shocked that someone has been cooking in the lab while he’s been away. He demands to know who it was but obviously there is only one person who it could have been. He rushes to Jesse’s house, who is entertaining Andrea and Brock. Jesse pushes Walt out of his house and onto his lawn. Walt pleads with Jesse, telling him that Gus wants Jesse to replace Walt and if Jesse agrees, Walt is dead. Jesse tells him he doesn’t care anymore and returns to his house. Walt is then approached by Tyrus and another guy, who electrocute Walt with a taser.

Tyrus and the other guy wait with Walt (who has a bag over his head) in the middle of the desert. Gus arrives and pulls the bag off Walt’s head. He tells Walt he is done, fired, and that if he ever goes near Jesse again, Gus will kill Walt’s wife, his son, and his baby daughter. Holy shit. He also tells him he is going to handle Hank. Walt is fucked, you guys.

While Saul discusses the Ted situation with his A-Team, Walt bursts into the office. Saul wonders how he knows about Ted (without mentioning Ted). Walt doesn’t know what he’s talking about, giving Saul a lucky break. He tells the A-Team to leave and then asks him what has happened. Walt wants the guy Saul told him about a few episodes back, the guy who can make people vanish. Saul tells him it’s going to cost a lot of money to vanish four people, at least half a million. Walt has to have the money and the family ready before he calls the guy. Before he leaves, Walt tells Saul he has to call the DEA and warn them that there is a hit out on Hank. Saul reluctantly does so, but says it’s the cartel and not Gus coming for Hank.

Walt returns to the White household and opens the floorboards. He descends into the crawl space and gathers up the money in the vacuumed bags. Skyler arrives to see what he is doing and Walt frantically asks her where the rest of the money is. She tears up and tells him she gave it to Ted. Walt freaks out and begins laughing maniacally. There’s no way out. Marie then leaves a message, panicking about the cartel coming to kill Hank once more.

Holy shit. This felt like a season finale and there are still two more episodes to go. How the hell is Walt going to get out of this one?

We sympathized with Gus as he took center stage in the past few episodes, because he wasn’t just the drug lord villain anymore. He had a mission to seek vengeance on all of the Cartel who kill his “hermano” years earlier. But now that he’s gotten his vengeance, he doesn’t seem that relatable anymore. He’s back to being a horrible villain who will do anything to keep his empire running. Its not vengeance anymore, its just violent greed. And I think that’s a terrible step back in his character.

However, the writers have to keep maintain focus that the show is about Walt and Jesse and not about Gus so this was probably done so the audience antagonizes Gus enough for them to feel satisfied when Jesse kills Gus at the end of the season. Gus’ achilles heel is that he trusts Jesse and Jesse’s main character trait is his loyalty to Walt. Jesse still has the cigarette full of risin and will most definitely utilize it to end Gus’ life and with Mike stuck in Mexico, there’s nothing he can do about it.

There are many more questions though. How will Walt’s marriage survive? Will Hank ever find out? Is Benecke dead (we saw his fingers move)? Will Jesse and Walt make up? And most importantly, who will take over Gus’ business?

My main theory is this. Hank will discover the operations, but before Gus can kill Hank, Jesse kills Gus. Hank becomes a hero for discovering the biggest drug operation in New Mexico history and Jesse gives Walt the money to disappear and tells him to never come back into his life. However, Skyler says she won’t leave with him and Walt is left in alone in his agony. Meanwhile, Mike finds out about Gus’ death, figures it was Walt, and vows to kill him leading into the next season. However, I’m pretty sure the season will end with the scene where Hank discovers Walt’s true identity.

By next season, Mike goes after Walt, while Hank is dealing with the crisis that his brother in-law is Heisenberg. Marie begs Hank to not arrest him because Skyler will end up going to jail too. Hank deals with the crisis, while Mike goes after him as well. Hank will either die or drop the case giving Walt the illusion of victory and freedom when he finds out that the cancer has spread and he has days to live. Cancer, the horrible disease that gave birth to this show, will come back to end the show on a most poetic note.
