Louie Recap (Season 2, Episodes 8 & 9): “Come On, God”/”Eddie”
There are two episodes of Louie today, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on how you think about it. Two episodes of Louie are good because we get a solid hour of Louis C.K. gold. Two episodes of Louie is also a bad thing because it means there’s not much of the show left, especially since there’ll be another two episodes in one night in two weeks time.
Luckily for us, both episodes tonight were amazing – but seriously, when is this show anything else? The first episode, “Come On, God” involves Louis going on Fox News to discuss masturbation a Christian woman named Ellen Farber, who leads a group called Christians Against Masturbation. The two debate about God and happiness and actually end up forming a bond. Ellen suggests Louis attend one of her meetings.
Louis returns home and fantasizes about a woman he met in the elevator. He tries to masturbate but finds it difficult as the fantasy becomes increasingly bizarre. He gives up after an elderly Asian man tells Louis that it’s not possible to fit an entire bag of dicks in the woman’s ass.
Louis attends one of Ellen’s meetings and afterwards the two walk the streets and talk about virginity. Louis explains that the first time a girl touched his penis he ejaculated with such force that he also farted. Ellen laughs and invites Louis back to her suite, where she emerges in a robe. Louis is confused and makes a move on her, which she immediately rejects. She speculates on what a relationship between the two would be like: talking and more talking and eventually a wedding and then that one night of passion that would be so special because it would be the first time they had ever touched one another.
We cut to Louis in the bathroom, masturbating and farting. The episode ends with Louis back in his home, trying to masturbate again. The news comes on the radio, talking about genocide and bloody entrails, resulting in Louis frustratingly giving up once again. If masturbation is his happiness, then it seems like Louis will never get it.
In the second episode, “Eddie”, Louis runs into an old friend after a show named Eddie. Eddie’s life seems to have fallen apart since the last time Louis saw him but he manages to recruit Louis on his night out.
The two go to a liquor store and buy some booze and then decide to go to an open mic event. Louis doesn’t want to go on stage but Eddie does, ranting about how disgusting sex and porn really are.
Louis wants to know what has happened to Eddie and why he doesn’t seem to care about anything anymore. Eddie explains that he’s going to some sports bar in Maine to perform stand-up for one last time before he overdoses on pills his doctor has given him. Eddie asks Louis to give him one reason to live. Louis refuses and shouts at him about how he has his own reasons to live and he’s not going to give any of them to Eddie. He hopes Eddie doesn’t kill himself and then leaves to return home.
Does Eddie kill himself? We don’t find out. Louie has always been more than just a comedy show – and these two episodes, “Eddie” in particular, prove this. Louis C.K. is a comedian very much obsessed with life and death and happiness and he’s said his bit: we all have to find our own reasons to live and what makes us happy might not necessarily make someone else happy. All I know is that I’m thankful for Louis continuing to go where other comedians wouldn’t dare and for FX for letting him do whatever he wants to do.
I think Louie is one of the best shows on TV at the moment – comedy or drama – and I expect it to go down as one of the greatest shows of all time when it’s over (which won’t be this year, as FX have renewed the show for a third season). If you aren’t watching Louie, you’re missing out on one of the most interesting shows on TV in a long time.
