The latest episode of The CW’s The Vampire Diaries starts with feel good cheesy love confessions, but ends on a darker note.
Everyone is preparing for Klaus’ imminent arrival in Mystic Falls. With their only Original-killing-dagger buried deep in Elijah, they need to find a new way to kill Klaus. The best place to start are the Gilbert journals. Damon and Katherine, who keeps insisting she’s there to “help”, pour over the journals for some clue to where the witches were massacred. They discover that when a witch is killed in a violent manner, they release a magic energy that marks the spot of their death.
Meanwhile, Stefan and Bonnie meet with Doc Martin and Luka to try and convince them to join forces to kill Klaus. While we don’t see this conversation, I don’t think it goes well because the Martins decide they need to revive Elijah rather than team up with Salvatore and Co. However, they do reveal to Stefan that Elijah was planning on channeling a witch’s power to kill Klaus. If Stefan and Damon can only find the site of the witch massacre they can channel all of that power against Klaus. Later, Damon reveals to Stefan that he’s discovered the location of the massacre, but they keep this a secret from Katherine.
That night Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, and Jenna have a girls night. With Caroline’s relationship with Matt on the rocks, and Jenna and Ric fighting, they need to let off some steam. The group heads to the grill where there’s a live band playing, but of course both Ric and Matt are there. Who didn’t they see that coming? Caroline, who is always at a loss for words, decides to tell Matt how she feels in a song. She jumps on stage and compels the band to be her backup, and in the feel good/nauseatingly sweet scene of the night, Caroline sings to Matt. They share an onstage kiss.
As the party rages at the bar, Luka and his father hold a ceremony to revive Elijah. They join powers and Luka is able to transport his soul (was it his soul?) to the Salvatore house. He sees Katherine and Damon reading, but they can’t see him. Luka heads for the basement. When Katherine visits the basement blood freezer for a snack, she senses Luka’s presence. She arrives in Elijah’s cell and sees the dagger being pulled out. She struggles with Luka to push it back in. Luka, realizing it’s Katherine and not Elena, grabs a stake and stabs her. Damon comes to the rescue and torches Elijah’s body and the invisible Luka (seriously, Damon has a dungeon and a flamethrower?). Back in his living room, Luka ignites and falls to the ground dead.
Doc Martin is understandably pissed. He goes to the grill to kidnap Elena so he can use her as leverage to get his daughter back from Klaus. Bonnie tries to stop him, but when she won’t tell him where Elena is, he starts blowing up lights and lighting things on fire. The bar devolves into chaos. Stefan shows up to rescue Elena, but in order to get her out of the bar Caroline attacks Martin. Martin brain-freezes her and Matt comes to her defense, but Martin quickly stabs him in the neck with a broken beer bottle. Caroline realizes she has no choice but to feed Matt her blood and heal him.
The rest of the gang arrives back at Elena’s house. Elena goes upstairs to wash her face, and Martin, who was hiding in the house, attacks her. But wait! It’s not actually Elena, it’s Katherine! She launches herself onto Martin and kills him. Hearing the commotion, Bonnie rushes upstairs and sees the dead warlock. She kneels beside him to close his eyes, but he sits up and grabs her, then finally dies. With his last act, Martin gave Bonnie her powers back.
Matt wakes up in Caroline’s room, and she confesses to him that she’s a vampire. He freaks out (understandably), and wants to know what she did to his sister. The conversation takes a creepy turn when Caroline keeps insisting that they’re going to be okay, and won’t let Matt leave. Eventually, he gets past her and rushes out of the house.
After Stefan, Damon, and Katherine have departed, Elena and Jenna commune over a pint of ice cream. But their conversation is interrupted by the doorbell. Jenna answers the door to find Isobel, Elena’s mother, waiting outside.
“The House Guest” isn’t as exciting as last week’s episode, but it’s a fairly solid filler episode. It moves the plot forward a little – they now know the location of the massacre even if they didn’t reveal it to the audience. Bonnie got her powers back, and as the only known witch left in town, she’ll be instrumental in the face off against Klaus. Also, the characters actually went to school! Or as Elena called it, “that thing we keep forgetting.” Why would a vampire go to school anyway? They’ve lived so long shouldn’t they know all that stuff and be way above the emotional level of highschoolers? Guess not. Anyway, this episode was filled with a lot more girly love confessions and mushy romantic scenes than usual, but it ended with a good cliffhanger. What is Isobel doing in Mystic Falls? We’ll have to wait till April 17th to find out!
Low points: Katherine constantly saying she’s there to help. The ridiculous amount of loopholes when it comes to finding, killing, keeping dead, and generally dealing with Originals.
High points: Caroline attacking Doc Martin. Damon’s line, “It’s some kind of crazy ass psychic witch attack!”.
