Now all I gotta do is get Tyson; No Problem!
Memo to self: Hair brained schemes do sometimes work. It seems I am half way to setting up a power lunch between superstar writer Paulo Coelho and Hall of Fame boxer Mike Tyson.
Coelho is one of the best selling authors of all time. Mike Tyson was the youngest heavyweight champion and one of the biggest draws in boxing history. What would be cooler then getting the two of them together to talk about life?
It seems like an impossible idea, but a week ago, the idea of me communicating with Coelho seemed just as unlikely. I have been a Twitter type person for about a week now. I am shocked not only by how fun it is, but by the constant flow of interesting and useful information I get from the people I follow.
When I first joined Twitter, two of the first people I searched for were Tyson and Coelho. I knew that Tyson was a new media sensation, but I was skeptical that anything would pop up for Coelho.
Wrong again, Mase.
It turns out Coelho is a Twitterin’ fool, which I could not be more grateful for. Coelho is a writer that has deeply impacted my life. I figured if he was on Twitter, he would have some inspirational and wise words to share.
You got that one right, Mason, old boy.
Coelho has over 1.5 million Twitter followers, three times more than Tyson. Tyson is also a very inspirational character to follow. He really seems to be trying hard to find the right path to follow throughout the rest of his life. It is nice to be a small part of, even if it does mean I have succumbed to our cult of personality culture.
But I would like to think Coehlo would tell me I like to be a part of it because I am a sensitive soul that wants to see mankind heal.
Regardless, I put a pretty nutty post up last night that somehow led to the idea of Coelho and Tyson getting together for lunch. I mean, how great would it be if Paulo Coehlo penned a Mike Tyson biography? And would it not be an unprecedented commercial success as well?
There aren’t many times you can do that with pure art.
Unbelievably, @PauloCoelho responded to me via Twitter after apparently reading the post:
“paulocoelho Paulo Coelho
@Mason_Lerner if it is you who wrote that column: I would love to have @MikeTyson for lunch and dinner”
Yes, it is me, Mr. Coelho. I really hope this is you as well. I am shocked and honored that you ever read one word that I wrote much less took the time to respond to my idea. Your words have been an inspirational presence in my life for many years now.
If you have never read a book by Coelho, just click on the following link for instant proof that he is a bad ass and the metaphysical philosopher supreme of this dimension: The man is actually wise enough to embrace internet piracy.
But I digress. I think at the stage of his life Tyson would do well to dip into Paulo Coelho’s reading list. Start with The Alchemist, like the rest of us, and go from there.
I believe that Mike Tyson would be especially overjoyed and enthralled if he read Coelho’s Warrior of the Light: A Manual. I am willing to clean Tyson’s pigeon cages for a week if I am wrong.
In fact, it should be required reading for Tyson before the two dine in, shall we say, Tuscany? How about Tuscany, Mr. Coelho? Am I pushing things?
I was deeply touched and honored that Mr. Coelho reached out to me. It was a huge thrill for a huge fan.
It would be even better if this somehow got back to Mr. Tyson. If he did a little bit of research on Coelho, if he is not already a fan, I am sure he would be interested in the lunch. Especially since dinner is on the table too. Vegan, of course.
What I’m trying to say here is, do I get the exclusive if this happens?
Yeah, I say funny stuff on Twitter.
