Ok — somebody walk me through this.
There are Democrats in New York who don’t like Kirsten Gillibrand. I don’t agree with them, but I can follow their thought process. During her two years (plus a few weeks) in the House, she had a record that was to the right of mainstream New York Democrats. She was pro-gun. Not for gay marriage. Not wild about illegal immigration. (Today, she is a mainstream liberal on all of those issues, of course). So some Democrats want to replace her as the Democratic nominee with…Harold Ford. Who registered to vote in the Empire State two months ago. Who strongly opposes gay marriage. Who is pro-gun. Who gets lousy ratings from abortion rights groups. This is where you lose me. Something does not compute.
Honestly, this is an exquisitely idiotic idea, and it deserves nothing but ridicule. And if Ford has any self respect, he won’t seriously entertain such an endeavor. From what I can tell, it was dreamed up by some very wealthy and/or elite New York Democrats (the Times story references Democratic financier Steven Rattner and NY State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch) with too much time on their hands.
