Why Two Snow Whites Means One Very Good Thing
Both upcoming flicks look to ditch doing things “damsel”
Next year, Relativity Media’s Snow White adaptation Mirror Mirror will be released just three months before Universal Pictures’ Snow White and the Huntsman. Each film will apparently take different approaches to the old fairy tale, but will inevitably draw on enough of the same source material to be compared. Although so far, it looks like what they have in common is far more important than what they don’t: In both versions, Snow White will be fighting for her Happily Ever After, rather than just waking up to one.
In the Disney take on the legend, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the character is jostled from plot point to plot point by others, and fails to contribute in the least to her own well-being by film’s end. In fact, once Snow White famously bites a poisoned apple given to her by her evil stepmother, she falls into a coma, remaining sidelined throughout the climax of her own story. Her resuscitation and safety are earned entirely by supporting characters, and thankfully, 2012′s Snow White movies seem to be prepping to fix that problem.
While details are still scant on either film at this point, promotional materials hint at promising revisions to the victimized version of Snow White. The more obvious strides forward are being taken by Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, as indicated by its description:
“In the epic action action adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman who was dispatched to kill her.”
The film’s released image of Kristen Stewart covered in armor and holding a sword and shield shows a sorely needed departure from the Disney spin. While Mirror Mirror looks to be a lighter interpretation of Snow White’s story, its description also reveals an intention to keep the character proactive:
“The newly titled film Mirror Mirror stars breakout star Lily Collins as an exiled princess who enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright and Oscar
