Marvel Comics offers an audiobook for blind readers

Marvel Senior Editor Steve Wacker spearheads a recording of Daredevil #1

Daredevil 150x150 Marvel Comics offers an audiobook for blind readersHot on the trail of the recently released Daredevil #1, the relaunch of the Marvel comic about the blind lawyer and superhero Matt Murdock, comes a free audiobook for visually impaired comic book lovers. Mark Waid, the writer behind the new series, leads the recording with descriptions of panels straight from his own script, while Wacker and Marvel associates read the dialogue of the characters.

According to Wacker, his idea to record the book was inspired by blind fans who have friends regularly read comics to them. Although there are no announced plans to continue making audiobooks for blind readers, this unprovoked gesture of inclusion for visually impaired fans is certainly a step in the right direction for Marvel. Audio adaptations of comic books are few and far between–not to mention easy to write off as tedious or irrelevant to a highly visual medium. That said, this experiment in storytelling is a tremendously significant approach to welcoming people with disabilities to join the fun.
