2012 Tony Award Winners: Once (More Than Once), James Corden, Audra McDonald

“Once” dominated the 66th annual Tony Awards, winning best musical, best actor, and six other Tonys. But the wealth was spread relatively wide: Out of 37 eligible shows, 11 won at least one Tony. Some expressed surprise at a win for Porgy and Bess over Follies for best revival of a musical, and James Corden over Philip Seymour Hoffman for best actor in a play. These were not the only surprises.

The least surprising award was Audra McDonald’s fifth Tony, for lead actress in Porgy and Bess, though her gracious acceptance speech made it seem as if she’d never won one before:
