Broadway Bloody Bloody Bloodbath: 24 Shows Closing By January’s End

Tweets44BloodyBloody Broadway Bloody Bloody Bloodbath: 24 Shows Closing By Januarys End With the announcements that Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson will be closing on January 2 and The Scottsboro Boys on December 12th, the number of Broadway shows set to close by the end of January climbs to 24.
How many new shows are scheduled to open by that time? Two.

Every year, many shows close in January, and many of the ones closing this year were limited runs to begin with. (Also, every year, few new shows open until the Spring: Here is the list so far of scheduled Broadway Spring 2011 shows.) Still, this seems an unusually high number.

Isn’t it worth highlighting that of the shows closing, 14 are limited runs (1 was extended, 2 shuddered early, and 2 are strictly holiday fare) and 6 are from previous seasons? And saying that only 2 shows are opening in January is just weird. How many shows ever open in the slowest part of the Broadway season? The spring is full of openings. But I guess placing anything into context wouldn’t fit into your ‘bloodbath’ and then (heaven forbid) you’d have to have a positive slant for the future of Broadway.

I just saw your comment, Jon, and while I admire your loyalty to Broadway, I think maybe you’re being a bit harsh.
I say right in the story: “Every year, many shows close in January, and many of the ones closing this year were limited runs to begin with”
But it’s fairly indisputable that Broadway is not having its best year. Why were so many of these shows limited runs in the first place? There were more of these than usual. Why does it matter that some of the shows closing are from previous seasons? To me, it’s some indication of tough times that so many shows are ending that were able to survive in the past.
As for the many new shows opening in the spring, I link to a list of them.
