High school never ends.
President Obama and French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, were caught in an embarrassing, non-presidential moment on Monday: bitching like seventeen-year-old girls about how much they hate the Israeli Prime Minister. The presidents were in Cannes for the G20 meeting and, after their joint press conference was over, they—and their mics—headed into another room where they could talk “privately”.
The conversation came about after Obama conveyed his displeasure at France’s decision to vote in favor of Palestine’s membership bid in UNESCO, regardless of Washington’s opposition. They then did what most teenage girls do when they want to locate common ground—found someone they both find incredibly irritating and shit-talked him behind his back.
These are the foundations of strong political friendships:
“I cannot stand him. He is a liar,” announced Sarkozy, speaking of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
“You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him every day!” Obama answered.
Unfortunately for the two, their microphones picked up the exchange and sent it to a room of reporters who were still wearing their translation earpieces.
Awkward.
The relationship between Obama and Netanyahu has been on edge for a while, so this isn’t huge news. In March 2010, the prime minister sat in the White House for over an hour after the president walked out of tense talks to have dinner with his family. Still, now was not exactly the best time to reveal his true feelings. With the election coming up, the Republican challengers, who have already accused him of throwing Israel under the bus, are going to waste no time capitalizing on this remark.
