Northwestern University Controversy: Live Sex Act in Class
A live sex demonstration performed as part of an after-class lecture at Northwestern University has compelled the President, Morton Schapiro to launch an investigation into the incident.
More than 100 students stayed behind after Prof. Michael Bailey’s, Human Sexuality, class for an optional, non-credit, seminar about bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism (BDSM).
Newly engaged couple, Jim Marcos (45) and Faith Kroll (25), was part of a group of four members of Chicago’s fetish community invited to talk to the students. However, things deteriorated into Mr. Marcos bringing his fiancé to orgasm by using a high-powered sex toy in front of the class.
Prof. Bailey initially hesitated in allowing the class to go ahead, but conceded to the prospect, saying, “my decision to say ‘yes’ reflected my inability to come up with a legitimate reason why students should not be able to watch such a demonstration.”
He continued that the feed-back from 100 students [600 students are enrolled in his class this quarter] who attended the event was “uniformly positive.”
The school president, Mr. Schapiro said: “I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member. I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University’s academic mission.”
This is a complete turn-around from a statement issued a day before when the University provided full support to the faculty involved. “The University supports the efforts of its faculty to further the advancement of knowledge,” the statement read.
The incident in question, the actual penetration itself, appeared to have happened almost by accident. “One of the students asked what my specific fetish was and mine is being in front of people, having the attention and being used,” said Faith Kroll, the 25 year-old woman involved in the act.
The Ryan Family Auditorium, filled with curious students, then witnessed Miss Kroll being penetrated by a sexual toy motorized by a hand held power drill, bringing her to climax in less than 3 minutes.
“I didn’t expect to see a live sex show,” said Julian Smith, a senior student who stayed behind for the optional seminar. But he didn’t seem to be all that bothered by what he had seen, admitting he told his grandparents about the incident. “My grandma was like, wow, Northwestern is a little bit different from when I went there,” he said.
Ken Melvoin-Berg who runs the “Weird Chicago Red Light Sex Tour”, which includes a game called “Spot the Ho” were participants travel around the city looking for prostitutes, narrated the seminar and was paid between $300 and $500 by the University.
He claims to have met Prof. Bailey through a swingers club and referring to the Feb 21st after class seminar said, “ I did mention this was going to be the best money their parents had spent on their education.”
President Schapiro and school officials appear concerned about the image this incident could leave on Northwestern. “I have directed that we investigate fully the specifics of the incident, and also clarify what constitutes appropriate pedagogy, both in this instance and in the future,” Schapiro wrote.
Prof. Bailey on the other hand wrote of the incident, “I was not in a mood to surrender to sex negativity and fear… I certainly have no regrets concerning Northwestern students, who have demonstrated that they are open-minded grown-ups rather than fragile children.”
