Amidst negotiations and an attempt to rescue four American hostages aboard the yacht Quest, Somali pirates decided to take lethal action, killing all four hostages. Among the American’s onboard the yacht in the Gulf of Arden were Southern Californian couple Scott and Jean Adam, and Seattle couple Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle.
After negotiations between the Somali pirates and the U.S. military went array, the U.S. Navy was able to capture 13 pirates and kill two others; the bodies of whom they found upon boarding the yacht after shots were fired.
According to CBS, Scott and Jean Adam have been living on their yacht in Southern California since 2004. They were spending half of the year in Marina Del Ray and the other half of the year on a Christian-based mission sailing around the world distributing Bibles to remote locations.
Despite the deployment of warships from numerous western nations, Somali pirates continue to troll the area for vulnerable vessels.
