Iron Maiden Snoozes Through New Single

eldorado3 298x300 Iron Maiden Snoozes Through New SingleIron Maiden have returned. On August 17th they will release their new album, The Final Frontier, their 15th release in a 30 year (!) career. As a herald for the impeding record, Maiden has released the single, “El Dorado,” as a free download to get the blood pumping. Does it succeed? Well…..no. If “El Dorado” is one of the better cuts, the metal titans might be getting a little rusty in the joints.

“El Dorado” isn’t a bad song. It’s really just lazy. All the standard Maiden-isms are in place, Steve Harris’ galloping bass lines, the buoyant guitars and ample shred factor, but we’ve heard all these things done before in better songs and with more enthusiasm. There’s a noticeable drop in tempo this time around and Bruce Dickinson never reaches for the rafters with his trademark falsetto, sticking instead to a strained mid-range yelp. It’s certainly not going to replace “Run to the Hills” any time soon and my guess is the whole song was written in about 45 minutes.

As admirable as it is that Iron Maiden have remained faithful to their style for so long, one has to wonder what their intentions are for making music in 2010. After 30 years they’re not about to release an experimental 5-hour blackened-sludge concept album about time travel (my idea, patent pending), which leaves them churning out lesser versions of older, better songs.

Do they need a new album as an excuse to tour? Fuck no. Maiden fans are legion and highly devoted. They’d come see them shred in wheelchairs if that was the only option. Are they afraid of irrelevance? Obscurity? Everyone has a copy of Number of the Beast! Fuckin’, EVERYBODY. They have enough rock solid material for a 10-hour set list, so what’s, I beg of you, is the point!?

You also have to wonder what classic track is going to get axed from the live set so they can hammer our this hot new single. Apparently, it’s a lot of them. MetalSucks reported last week that Maiden, currently on tour with Dream Theater, has skewed their set-list heavily towards their last two lukewarm albums, Dance of Death and A Matter of Life and Death (real original fellas), much to the chagrin of devoted fans who, y’know, wanted to have fun at the show or something. At this rate, they’re not going to have either their recorded output or their live experience to stand on.

Wow, I guess nobody who knows anything about Iron Maiden was available to post a review! It’s a shame when they have to resort to having morons post reviews instead of someone who might know a thing or two about grammar as well!

“lukewarm” albums ? you’re a fool and ignorant

The writer has made some reasonable points. Maiden make good albums, but in the past the energy and creativity were noticeably making an impression and a difference in metal and music. Now, this is not the case. My guess is that some very faithful fans are going to stick up for El Dorado, and that’s fine, but while the song is good, it is not in the same league as Hallowed be Thy Name, and it is really not unique or mind boggling in any way. What did happen with the vocals on this song? It was not as good as some of the vocals on earlier albums, and the vocals on Matter of Life and Death all sounded the same, Very High Pitched. I’m not sure why Dickinson wanted to sing like that as he’s never done that before. Brave New World is a good album, better than the other two newer ones, with a great delivery by Dickinson on every track. El Dorado is not as good as some of their older stuff, no, but it sure does bury Quest for Fire. I am glad that Maiden avoided naming their album some cliche having to do with ‘death’ again though. But it’s too bad they won’t work with Derek Riggs anymore. Newer artists just can’t do that Eddie face as well (see the Killers cover for reference). Still, I’m glad they will play Hallowed on this tour, and I’ll be there, not wishing for the past, but just to see what is an old classic

First listen of el dorado and i thought…that was a bit lazy….but after repeated listenings it got better and better.
Firstly it sounds like iron maiden. Well thats good hey.
If you listen carefully to the guitars in the build up bit, they actually match up to bruces singing. At first it sounded like a lazy meandering solo, but then i realised that when bruces voice went up a notch, the guitars did so as well. Brilliant. The galloping bass at the start, although is not new just shows how much energy the boys have. I think that after the slow starts on matter of life and death, they answered there critics with this powerful start. The youtube stuff i saw from texas and the first ever performance of el dorado was unreal. The boys rock hard. Harder than anyone. Slayer is good and metallica finally did the record they should have done after justice, but took em nearly 20 years.
Maiden get better under critical analysis. If they werent an english band they would be bigger than the beatles i reckon. No band can play stuff from different eras like maiden. Think kiss…there setlist is the same as allways. Maiden are fresh and new and this is unprecedented in music.I cant wait to hear the new record. If el dorado is anything to go by, it just might go number one in many many countries in the world. Including usa. I will be lining up the day it is released

Caught the band live in Washington this week and I have to say, El Dorado kicks major ass live. The band is doing mostly newer stuff this time around, having done ‘classics’ on the last two tours. While I didn’t know a ton of the songs, I was duly impressed. I have seen them 10 or 11 times since 1985 and they never ever fail to deliver. I posted a full review with video and photos here – http://bit.ly/94kY6j
