Vote on Our First Reader Investigation — Then Help Us Investigate the Winning Topic

Welcome to our first TFT Reader Investigation. Reader Investigations are a two-part process. First, we want to learn which of several topics our readers are most interested in investigating. Once we’ve chosen a topic, we’ll assign an experienced Faster Times reporter to work with all of you to find answers. Our reporter will guide the investigation, pose questions, and update everyone. But, as you can see from the topics we’re voting on, these are huge stories. We’re really counting on our readers to research, send us tips, and discuss the next steps in the comments.

Note: Please sign up on The Faster Times e-mail list (see sign-up box on our homepage) to make sure that you receive updates on the investigation as it progresses.

Genetically Modified Organisms

Genetically modified organisms – think genetic engineering – are everywhere, most prominently in agriculture. We want to chronicle the foods you eat and the products you use that contain GMOs, as well as see how they are being regulated – or not – in countries around the world.

Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles are miniature versions of bigger particles that behave vastly differently from their larger siblings. Despite their use in everything from batteries to sunscreen, the EPA does not regulate them. We want to find out which products actually contain nanoparticles and what threat — if any — their widespread use pose to both people and the planet?

Generic and Store Brand Foods

Private label companies are behind almost all the generic and store brand foods on our shelves, from Wal-Mart to Trader Joe’s. But these companies are not at all transparent, and we want to know more. So who exactly is making that Safeway-brand tomato sauce, and how do they conduct their businesses?

Voting deadline is Sunday, April 25th at 11:59 PM.
