Every year, we remind ourselves not to take the Maxim Hot 100 seriously, and yet every year we end up spending a little bit too long puzzling over it. This year’s edition brought a number of mysteries: How did Amanda Bynes get to be 23 years old already? Who is iJustine? Katy Perry is really the sexiest lady the magazine could find?

But overall, the list was predictable: It just wasn’t particularly diverse, in terms of the ages, races, and body types. Swimsuit and lingerie models were wildly overrepresented. And you know what? Maxim picked: Swimsuit model Marisa Miller

Our pick: Let’s forget, for a moment, that the idea of the wholesome, blonde all-American girl is sort of offensive to every American girl that doesn’t fit that ideal. Working within those constraints, we’re going with Amanda Seyfried, a soap opera and CSI alum who has about a million movies just out or in production while holding her own with some of TV’s best actresses on the maddeningly addictive Big Love.

A new version of The Karate Kid hits theaters today, and we’re feeling ambivalent. Wasn’t the original Daniel Larusso/Mr. Miyagi combination fantastic enough? Plus, the updated edition replaces “wax on, wax off” with “jacket on, jacket off,” and it’s not even about karate. It’s about kung fu. Is nothing sacred?

Inspired by our enduring love for the original Karate Kid, we’ve compiled a list of ten films you probably watched as a kid that you should watch again as an adult – not only because we believe nostalgia is a virtue worth cultivating, but also because we believe these are simply great movies. As an adult, you may enjoy them for different reasons than you did as a wide-eyed youngster, but that just proves their timelessness. In a world where we have artists like Girl Talk, it’s hard to take plagiarism accusations between musicians as seriously as we once might have. (Except for that guy who ripped off the White Stripes for the Air Force Super Bowl ad. That was impossible to write off as “inspired by.”) But that doesn’t stop them from rolling in. The latest: Kelly Clarkson is being accused of ripping of Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion (Lies)” in a newly-leaked demo for “Naked Eye.”

When Vulture’s Edith Zimmerman first drew a comparison between the two yesterday, we’re embarrassed to admit that we couldn’t hear it. Then our helpful music editor Judy Berman pointed out that the songs share a very similar drum beat. She also copped to liking Kelly Clarkson’s version better. We experienced a quarterlife crisis around the same time that Funeral came out, so we’re on Team Fire.

In its final season, Lost has seen more leaks than, well… Apple. We saw the season premiere shamefully early, and Gawker recently got its hands on what seems to be a copy of the series finale’s call sheet. But the security breaches don’t end there. Now, it appears that six pages of screenplay from the show’s final episode have ended up in the hands of… an Italian website called Macchianera? Um, sure. Why not? And because we can’t resist our curiosity about how Lost will end (not to mention dubious that the writers will manage a satisfactory resolution, given how few episodes they have left), we’re going to peruse the script, compare it with Gawker’s call sheet, and decide whether we think it’s real or not. We’ve got Mad Men-related good news and bad news. The bad news first: Matthew Weiner has confirmedthat the show will only last for six seasons. Prepare to say farewell come 2012. OK, now onto the good news. Mad Men star/frequent subject of body image jabber Christina Hendricks is on the cover of the May issue of Esquire. As Irin Carmon over at Jezebel notes, she doesn’t look quite like herself in some of the photos – but they are stunning, nonetheless. This one made me think: boobs! “When I first started dating my husband, I had this weird fascination with the circus and clowns and old carnival things and sideshow freaks and all that. About a month after we started dating, he bought me this amazing black-and-white photo book on the circus in the 1930s, and I started sobbing. Which freaked him out. I thought, Oh, my God, I mentioned this three or four weeks ago and talked about it briefly, but he was really listening to me. And he actually went out and researched and found this thing for me. It was amazing.”

Last night on Idol, the remaining nine contestants (yep, there’s still nine of ‘em; Michael Lynche was saved from the jaws of defeat by the judges) took on the songs of Elvis Presley. Like The Beatles’ songbook, tackling Elvis’ catalog can be tricky. Many of these songs are so iconic that it can be difficult to reinterpret them. As a result, there was a whole lot of karaoke cum Glee happening on the Idolstage last night.

With a few exceptions, many of the contestants’ performances came off as boring and completely uninspired. The biggest shocker of the evening was Tim Urban’s phenomenal take on “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” This had “disaster” written all over it (after all, it’s one of the King’s classics), but Tim managed to totally update the song and really make it his own. Lee Dewyze is no stranger to being on the top of our list – and this week he earned his place with a fantastically bluesy take on “A Little Less Conversation.” His rocker sensibilities have really served him well so far in the competition and, as expected, they helped him shine last night. His voice was in good form and his showmanship has gotten a little better as well. The judges agreed, and totally loved the performance. Randy told Lee he was “in the zone” and Kara commented that his rendition exhibited a “vocal intensity” that she hasn’t seen in him up until this point. Simon merely told him that he “nailed it.”

Here Come the Jersey Shore Spin-Offs

Last December, The Jersey Shore became a pop culture phenomenon. Not only do the juiced up and overly-tan Italian-American cast members have a hit show, they’ve made the rounds on the late night talk show circuit, re-enacted the Best Picture nominated films, and introduced a new dance craze.

Now other proud hyphenated American groups want to cash in on the of-the-moment fervor and as a result there have been several casting calls for shows that are using The Jersey Shore formula. We’ve already told you about the L.E.S. version, but after the jump we’ve rounded up other shows that are in the works and added one that we’d like to see.

The Asian-American Version
Found in the Help Wanted section of LA’s Craigslist, Tyrese Gibson’s HQ Pictures is looking for “beautiful Asian-Americans with lively, strong, and unique personalities between the ages of 18 to 30 with equally interesting life stories and perspectives to share.” But that’s not all folks. They’re also encouraging those who “are not Asian but are obsessed with Asian culture or people in some way” to apply as well. We think that part is way creepy.

We loved the idea, but when it came time for us to place our vote, the options left us feeling rather uninspired.
