Fergie Flashback: Singing Lionel Richie on “Kids Incorporated”

fergie Fergie Flashback: Singing Lionel Richie on Kids Incorporated

Those of you that grew up in the 80s may remember a horrific little show called Kids Incorporated. The series revolved around a group of kids who performed mega lame renditions of the popular songs of the day in exceedingly irritating “Broadway vibrato.” Even for the 80s, this show went above and beyond the call of duty in the cheese department. Tackling obligatory teenaged topics like divorce, drugs, and puppy love, through song and dance, each episode felt like a mini Afterschool Special on a bad acid trip.

I was personally a bit past the demographic it was geared to, but I can remember sitting around with my friends and mercilessly tearing it to bits with our best teenaged sarcasm. I suppose we were being “snarky” and “ironic” by watching that crap, but we didn’t know it. I guess my generation invented the concept of watching awful TV programming, solely for the sake of irony -- don’t say we never did anything for ya!

The other day, I was doing a bit of YouTube reminiscing and I came across this nightmarish clip of a young Fergie of Black Eyed Peas fame (who happened to be a cast member on Kids Incorporated, along with Jennifer Love Hewitt) warbling Lionel Richie’s “Say You Say Me.” I can’t even begin to describe this positively blood chilling disaster, as it really needs to be seen to be believed. All I’ll say, is it involves crispy bangs, hassidic side curls,  and a handicapped clown (who may or may not be homicidal).

For your Friday viewing pleasure…enjoy!

Just your average, ordinary, every day malcontented misanthrope. My disdain for the current state of popular culture permeates my very core. Hence, I feel obligated to tug on your coat about it until you’re just as nauseated as I am. ...

Why… would you incorporate the clown in the video? He totally kills the vibe of the song! I need to find the direction of the show and give him a major talking-to, which would start with the words, “Dude, the clown is EXTREMELY distracting.”
