50 Shades of Porn, The Movie?

Will the film adaptation of the popular novel be an all-out porno or a date-night flick?

Yes the rumors are true. 50 Shades of Grey will indeed be adapted for film, but this development has many people – 50 Shades fans and foes alike – wondering how Universal will pull it off. The book’s popularity is unprecedented, and everyone from your grandmother to Gilbert Godfried is reading it. Will the film be as popular, or is seeing more scandalous than imagining?

One twitter user says, “50 Shades of Grey, the movie, is on deck. How can they possibly make that movie without it being a full on porn flick?” And she’s not the only one. The twittersphere is up in arms about how the movie will be made and who will star in it.

Is the book just too graphic for the big screen? Matt Atchity, Editor-In-Chief at Rotten Tomatoes, doesn’t think so. “You have to go for an R-rating on a book like that – a book about seduction and bondage,” says Atchity. “If they were bold, they would release it with an NC-17 rating, but I don’t think they’ll do that because some theaters will refuse to show it.”

Universal co-chair Donna Langley was quoted by The New York Daily News saying, “At its core, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen.” So who will those delicate and sophisticated hands belong to? Michael DeLuca and Dana Brunetti, the producers behind The Social Network.

The next big question is: Which Hollywood stars are bold enough to step into the naughty shoes of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele? Many names have been floated including Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, and Emilia Clarke for Anastasia, and Channing Tatum, Ian Somerhalder, and Ryan Gosling for Christian. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were also in the running, but in light of recent events, that’s probably not happening.

Whoever is chosen will suit up with whips and leather, and fans are having very mixed emotions. The most controversial choice for the role of Anastasia appears to be Emma Watson, who is still Hermione to Potter freaks everywhere.

“WHAT?! Emma Watson might be staring [sic] in the 50 Shades of Grey movie?! I’m disgusted…NOT OUR HERMIONE!!” said one Twitter user. Many are bewailing the prospect, but there are others who would commend the actress for breaking out of a post-Potter, child star funk. Of course, there are others who really just want to see Em Watson naked.

No matter what you hear though, “All of the rumors on #FiftyShades are just that – rumors. No one has been cast in any role. We have to get a writer and director first,” producer Brunetti tweeted on Monday. While 50 Shades fans continue to tweet their top casting picks, the process, like all good love affairs, will inevitably require tension and time.
